Fog Light Switch Bulb Replacement

Ever since I bought my 35th, the fog light switch indicator light has never lit up. I know that the switch is sold as a sealed unit so finding just a bulb isn't easy. Finally I took my switch apart and I went to the ford dealer and sorted through their mini bulbs until I found a match to the foglight switch bulb. It matches to part number D4AZ-13466-A, also known as generic 37. My cost is 1.26 each. Pricey little guys, but they work just fine. If you have never changed the bulb in this switch, here is how I did it.

To remove the fog light switch:

- Place blocks under the wheels to keep the vehicle from rolling.
- Place the vehicle in park if it's an automatic and pull the hand brake all the way up.
- Open the console lid and unscrew the three phillips screws at the back edge of the console switch panel just under where the lid closes.
If equipped with automatic transmission: Insert the ignition key into the ignition switch and turn to on position. Then move the shift lever to at least the D position. You can then turn the key back a bit until the ignition is off and just leave it for now.
- Gently lift up on the back of the switch panel to gain access to the switch connectors.
- Unplug the fog light switch and the ride control switch connectors.
- Now gently lift the panel back and up over the hand brake handle so that the center console section is now in your hands.
- Place the center section upside down on your lap or work table, unscrew two screws holding the fog light switch to the panel and remove the switch.

At this point, you are ready to disassemble the fog light switch. Carefully slip a small thin pocket knife blade into the crack between the two sections of the switch. Gently pry the blade toward and slightly into the top portion of the switch between the two visible plastic tangs that hold the halves together. Very gently begin to pry the blade up and away so that the wall of the upper portion moves up and away from the plastic tangs. It won't take much. The switch will separate at that side. You may be able to separate the other side without help but if you need to, insert the knife blade into the other side and separate the halves there as well. Here is the tricky part. The upper section that has the toggle switch has an inner plastic piece that pivots on a small spring loaded BB. The BB is inside and toward the toggle panel. If you happen to drop the inside piece, don't worry. Just don't lose the BB. Now you can see the bulb held in place on the bottom half of the switch that contains the copper runners. This bulb will come out with a slight push from it's base. It may even pop out and go flying. It depends on how tightly the brass fingers hold the bulb. My switch needed to have the fingers pushed together to make them hold the bulb tighter. Replace the burned out bulb with the new one.

Now it's time to reassemble the switch. If you dropped the BB, make sure it and all areas are clean. Hold the inner section in your hand with the spring for the BB facing up. Place the BB on top of the spring where it is supposed to sit. Now look up into the upper half switch section and you will see a small raised tip inside the toggle panel of the switch. This is where the BB rides against under pressure. Hold the upper half in one hand and slip the inner section with the BB on top up into the panel so that the raised tip presses the BB into the spring area just a bit. You should be able to tell where the opening is for the light bulb holder when the lower half is attached. Holding the upper half together, tip the upper half upside down so that the inner section remains where it is. As long as the upper portion is not jostled and is kept upside down, the BB should stay put. Now bring the lower half down onto the upper half making sure you align the bulb to the opening in the upper half where the bulb shines. Gently press the two halves together until they click. The switch is now assembled. Move the toggle panel on top to make sure it operates properly and makes that distinctive clicking when you go from on to off positions. If the switch doesn't toggle correctly, you will have to disassemble the switch carefully and retry positioning the BB in the upper inner section.

Now you can plug the switch into the connector harness and make sure the foglights come on and the switch lights up. You can then unplug the switch and reinstall it into the console center section. Then reinstall the console center section and you are done. Now your fog light switch will be like it was when new. I have tried to be accurate and thorough in this procedure. I hope it's helpful to you.
